JANE MARSH MASTER CLASS

Rose Building, 6th floor - Lincoln Center newly renovated Metropolitan Opera Guild Theater
JANE MARSH, noted international soprano, will give a master class through the auspices of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. The subject of this master class is the music of Giuseppe Verdi: early; middle; and late periods. Opera Index winners mezzo-soprano Kristy Swann and tenor Michael Szczesniak will participate. Ms. Marsh will continue to innovate with the structure of the master class as she did in the 2006 Opera Index sponsored master class on Mozart and Salieri. The guild is expected to have at least one more master class with Ms. Marsh this season, attesting to their interest in her innovations.

SAMUEL BARBER’S “ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA” SYMPOSIUM

The Miller Theater at Columbia University - time in afternoon to be announced
CORI ELLISON, dramaturg of the New York City Opera, will lead a symposium on Samuel Barber’s 1966 opera Antony and Cleopatra with a libretto based on the play by William Shakespeare. This opera opened the new Metropolitan Opera house in Lincoln Center and was revised in 1976. Ms. Ellison will have noted speakers at the symposium. The concert of this opera will be held in Carnegie Hall January 15th and 16th with Lauren Flanigan singing the part of Cleopatra.

NEW AMERICAN OPERA PREVIEWS

MIDGE WOOLSEY will host an afternoon of excerpts from two new operas that will be performed in the near future. These opera excerpts will be performed by singers from the Encompass New Opera Theatre and the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Woolsey will moderate panels comprised of composers, librettists, directors, and performers.

TEATRO GRATTACIELO PRESENTS PIETRO MASCAGNI’S “IL PICCOLO MARAT”

This year TEATRO GRATTACIELO will present a rarely performed Mascagni opera Il piccolo Marat, first performed on May 1, 1921. The opera has the lyricism and drama reminiscent of his best known work Cavalleria rusticana and is noted for its powerful choral music and beautiful duets. It takes place during the French Revolution and follows the adventures of “The Little Marat”. DUANE PRINTZ, founding general director of the company, will moderate a panel of artists on the opera. A highlight will be vocal excerpts by cast members. A reception will follow.

“SUOR ANGELICA” – ELAINE MALBIN

at the Paley Center for Media, 25 West 52nd St. Formerly the Museum of Television and Radio
ELAINE MALBIN portrayed Suor Angelica twice on NBC Opera Theatre telecasts in the 1950s. A complete showing of the March 7, 1953, telecast will be shown with Winifred Heidt as the Principessa. This will be followed by an excerpt of the December 5, 1954, telecast with mezzo-soprano Shannon Bolin as the Principessa. Peter Herman Adler conducted and Kirk Browning directed both. After the presentation of the telecasts, Eric Meyers, noted author, will interview Elaine Malbin and Shannon Bolin.
